Eskom is the only electricity utility in South Africa, providing roughly 90% of the countries electricity needs. They currently employ about 32,000 people, with approximately 5000 middle to senior managers. The company recently had the top structure of their corporate university approved, and has started building the remaining programs. Although the decision to build a corporate university is important, it is equally important for the senior team involved to display a passion for the corporate university they create. As a country in the developed world, the skill crunch is particularly pertinent to Eskom. Their engineers and chemists are sough after all over the world, thus requiring specific leadership strategies in place to keep a strong talent pool. The quality of leadership is the determinant when it comes to whether people stay with the company or pursue a career elsewhere. Eskom intends to design impacting programs in order to build a consistent leadership bench organization-wide.
